My Project
Redesigning the covers of 10 romanitize novels, 5 from one author and 5 from another, in the swiss design style in order to create a design that will still invoke the same content but without the stigma of the traditional cover imagery.
My problem and why I am address it
Book covers are critical in not only who buys the books but who will even pick it up and read the back and considering purchasing the novel. This can become a problem in the romance novel genre as the typical romance novel tends to only appeal to a very narrow demographic, female middle age and married with a family, but that demographic isn’t the only one interested in the plot of the typical romance novel which is addressed in Why I am a Dude Who Proudly Reads Romance by Donn Saylor. This article talks about a man who enjoys a good romance just as much as the next soccer mom and according to Romance Writers of America 16% of romance readers are men.
Although this particular man said he no longer feels shame to show people the covers with shirtless men and swooning women of his favorite books, when he was younger he was always embarrassed if people saw these covers. This is the problem I want to address with my cover redesigns, to create covers that aren’t the obvious romance design by using the swiss design style.
I will use shapes and colors that still invoke the feeling of romance and intrigue that is found in the plot of these books, but will be a more subdued version for the closet romance reader. This will be my demographic that I aim my designs at, people who thoroughly enjoy the romance genre but are too embarrassed to buy the books due to the cover and judgement they may receive.
Deliverables
- 10 book covers
These covers are broken into four series two from each author, each series will have its own look that goes along with their content, but all the books for each author will have a similar feel to be able to stand together and all ten books will be able to stand as a visual series through the use of swiss style
